So having a baby was definitely not the right thing for me and my boyfriend to do...

“First of all, I'm a 19 year old student. So having a baby was definitely not the right thing for me and my boyfriend to do. I chose to have a surgical abortion with light sedation. When I arrived on the day I waited ages to be seen, once that wait was over the nurse took my blood (finger prick), my blood pressure and did a ultrasound scan to see how many weeks I was. I was 5 and a half. I then had to go back into the waiting room to be called again. Once this happened I was asked to take off my trousers and knickers and cover myself with a sheet. I then went through to the surgical room, I was introduced to the 2 nurses, the doctor and the anesthetiser. I laid down, put my legs on the stirrups (while covered) and the doctor inserted the needle (I hate needles and this honestly wasn't bad). He then said if get a weird taste in the mouth and a tingly face - which I did.
The next thing I remember was waking up in the recovering room where I drunk some water, took 4 antibiotics and left after about 10 minutes. All in all it took about 40 minutes from start to finish and I was out cold.
I was scared but there is honestly nothing to be scared about, it was painless (except some cramping afterwards) and I remember nothing from the procedure. I hope this helps anyone who is thinking of or going through it. I'm scared of hospitals and doctors and all of that stuff but I found the whole experience good (as good as it can be). Thank you to everyone at Marie Stopes- highly recommended.” —Anonymous
