I keep hearing people tell me, ‘It doesn’t define you.’ That’s fine. I know I am not my abortion, but my abortion is a part of me.

February 28, 2017

“I keep hearing people tell me, ‘It doesn’t define you.’ That’s fine. I know I am not my abortion, but my abortion is a part of me. I don’t regret my decision. I don’t regret my procedure. I don’t mind that I went alone. I don’t mind that I wasn’t sedated. I don’t mind the pain that I felt or the tears that I shed in the operating room. I don’t mind the scars that leave others wondering. I don’t mind the mixture of emptiness, relief and anxiety I felt afterwards. I don’t mind the angry pro-lifer who chased me to my car, condemning me to hell.

I am thankful for my parents, my friends, my nurses, my counselors and my surgeon. I am thankful for the therapist who called me a hero for enabling myself, despite the pain, to do what was best for my life and for my future. I am thankful for the escort who protected me from hateful words and judgement as we rushed to and from my car. Thank you for accepting me and my choice. Thank you for not questioning me, not judging me and not forcing me. Thank you for helping me when I felt helpless and lost; you guided me back to my life and to my freedom. I am lucky.

Many women do not have the support system that I (to my surprise) ended up having, but I want those women to know that they are not alone. No matter what your reason is for your abortion, we, your sisters, will support you, protect you and love you. You deserve a safe procedure. You deserve a choice. You deserve a future that you want. And you deserve love. If you need someone to talk to, someone to listen, we will be here for you with an open heart.”  —Tiffany
